We want to ensure you are aware of important changes to leave entitlements under the Canada Labour Code that took effect December 12, 2025. These amendments introduce new provisions related to pregnancy loss and expand bereavement leave in certain circumstances. More specifically:
Pregnancy Loss Leave
- Employees with at least three months of continuous employment are now entitled to 3 paid days of leave following a pregnancy loss.
- In cases of stillbirth, employees may take up to 8 weeks of unpaid leave.
- Where existing collective agreement provisions provide greater benefits (such as 5 paid days in certain bargaining units), those stronger entitlements remain in place and are not reduced (Article 26.02 of the CATCA Collective Agreement).
Bereavement Leave (Loss of a Child)
- * NEW* Employees may now take up to 8 weeks of unpaid leave following the death of a child or the child of a spouse or common-law partner.
- Existing entitlements of five paid bereavement days continue to apply (Article 26.02 of the CATCA Collective Agreement)
How to request leave
All leave, paid or unpaid, must be submitted through Workday.
