Extension to Existing Transport Canada Exemption on Medical Certificates
In a B&F released June 4, 2020, it was announced that Transport Canada had issued an exemption to the renewal of medical certificates expiring between March 17, 2020 and March 31, 2021. The exemption is now extended to March 31, 2022 with one significant change regarding the methods by which an ATC medical certificate can be renewed. As of March 2, 2021, Transport Canada have indicated attestations of fitness are not permitted for the renewal of medical certificates. This means there are now two methods to renew your medical certificate:
Telemedicine consult with CAME:
If your ATC medical certificate expires between March 17, 2020 and March 31, 2022, to renew your medical certificate by Telemedicine:
- Contact your CAME to verify that they offer Telemedicine examinations. TC have confirmed that medical certificate holders may renew by Telemedicine more than once, and this includes renewals under the previous exemption.
- On successful completion of the Telemedicine examination, the CAME will complete and send a “Civil Aviation-Fit Certification” form (TC Form 26-0862AE).
- On receipt of the “Civil Aviation-Fit Certification” form, provide a copy to your manager as proof of the renewal, and OPT will be updated. The original form must be kept with your Aviation Document Booklet (ADB).
Should a CAME not be able to reach a conclusion regarding the fitness of an application using a Telemedicine examination, the CAME will require that the applicant undergo an in‑person examination.
In-person examination with CAME:
If your ATC medical certificate expired before March 17, 2020, or a CAME indicated during a Telemedicine consultation that you must attend an in-person examination, or you require a new medical certificate, you must schedule an in-person examination with your CAME.
The CAME will stamp your Aviation Document Booklet and the current medical certificate renewal process will apply.
