Today, NAV Canada has announced they are now in the Request for Proposal (RFP) phase of their Digital Facilities initiative to identify the vendor for the future implementation of the Digital Aerodrome Air Traffic Services (DAATS) program. The Company is currently performing on-site evaluations from several different vendors to determine which will be most suitable for our, and their needs.
For input and subject matter, NAV Canada has solicited engagement from the groups (ATC and FSS) that will be the end users of the system and eventually help shape what the final product will look like for real-world use. Engaging CATCA members in these early stages for input through all phases of this project and other technology driven initiatives moving forward, is a crucial step toward shaping our future and protecting the interests of our members.
It is important to note that NAV Canada has been researching DAATS for several years now which had an initial test location in Red Deer, Alberta. Although that project was not successful, there were a lot of lessons learned and during the RFP process the Company is using the experience and expertise of CATCA members to help with selection of the most suitable technology. CATCA has 3 members attending the ongoing assessment meetings with the Company and its potential vendors, 2 of which were involved in the Red Deer trials and have very valuable knowledge to share in the process.
The Company has established a very thorough evaluation process and CATCA insists on contributing toward this endeavor. This collaborative approach is encouraged, and we are optimistic that this will result in positive change. While the development, implementation, and use of the first Digital Facility is a few years away, being involved during the early stages will benefit the Company and our members with the end product. The CATCA Technical Committee has provided a report on DAATS that is live on our website now.
