As technology evolves, the push to equip controllers with more sophisticated decision-support tools continues to grow. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are increasingly being adopted to enable the system to offer solutions to controllers. The projects mentioned below are AI-driven tools with ML incorporated, designed to provide “conflict resolution support for planning and tactical controllers, reducing cognitive load and adding a safety check for flight clearances.” (https://www.eurocontrol.int/article/lord-adds-speed-and-flexibility-decisions-maastricht-controllers). Ultimately allowing a controller to manage more traffic.
While these tools can be highly beneficial by offering potential solutions, they also pose a risk. As controllers begin to depend on these systems, there is a danger that their instincts and ability to operate independently may be diminished, especially in situations where the system fails.
The upcoming TechTalk hosted by IFATCA offers an excellent opportunity to gain insights into the future of air traffic control, and the CATCA Technology Committee is encouraging all members to register and attend the virtual session.
If you have questions or would like more information about ATS technology or CATCA technology roles, please contact any member of the CATCA Technology Committee or email techcommittee@catca.ca
